Historic Mania: Breaking Down All Four WrestleMania 42 Women's Championship Matches
You didn't think I would miss writing about WrestleMania, did you? It's historic this year — four women's championship matches across two nights, with three of them on Night 1 alone. And yes, as I am writing this, the Women's Tag Team Title Fatal 4-Way is shaping up to be the emotional main event of Night 1. Wild, right? But we'll get there.
My plan is to do separate posts for each match eventually, but plans exist to sink and be changed at the last minute — not only in show business and wrestling specifically, but in life in general. So let's dive.
Here is the deal: I'm starting with the match that is the least buzzy to me personally, and ending with the one(s) I wouldn't miss for anything.
LET ME CLARIFY THAT THIS "CHART" DOESN'T DISMISS THE IMPORTANCE OF ANY OF THESE MATCHES OR REDUCE THE VALUE OF ANYONE INVOLVED. IT'S A BIT MORE PERSONAL, MIXED WITH ANALYSIS. WHEN I SAY "LESS OF A BUZZ," I MEAN I STILL WANT TO WATCH THE MATCH — BUT FROM A BOOKING PERSPECTIVE, IT'S NOT THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE THAT NIGHT ON TOP!
AJ LEE (c) VS. BECKY LYNCH
WWE Women's Intercontinental Championship — Night 1
This match is placed before the Women's World title bout on the card, which makes sense given the sheer star power. AJ and Big Time Becks are huge, established names in WWE and worldwide, so their rematch deserves a solid spot — and it has one.
But to me personally? I don't have a ton of excitement built up for it. And it has nothing to do with either woman's talent or my admiration for them. It was just… expected. The moment AJ submitted Lynch at Elimination Chamber in Chicago to win the belt, it was obvious where the rematch was headed. It was almost too clean of a story.
That said, I believe this match is going to be intense and dramatic. Both competitors have clearly elevated their game since Wrestlepalooza, and these women genuinely deserve to be at the Show of Shows. WrestleMania is a huge, demanding stage — it always has been — and I'm expecting a strong mix of technical wrestling and dramatic storytelling from both of them. That's what they do best.
As for who walks out with the belt? It doesn't matter! This is a win-win situation. I tend to cheer for AJ (because I love getting into the story), but Becky is an iconic and ultra-talented villain who would add a nice twist, fuel the rivalry further, and make Lee's return feel truly worth its price of admission. Either way, the Women's IC title continues to rise.
And yet, the other three matches are way more important to me tonight.

STEPHANIE VAQUER (c) VS. LIV MORGAN
WWE Women's World Championship — Night 1
This match was my dream booking for WM 42. I wanted to see Liv facing Vaquer after her Royal Rumble win, and it happened. For good.
I have to say, the build in the months leading into Mania was really well done. Morgan's talent to elevate segments outside the ring completely elevated this storyline, and I expected nothing less from her. Stephanie Vaquer is stunning and one of my all-time favorites — but if it weren't for Liv's lead in those segments, this rivalry could have felt dry, and the anticipation for a great match would have been lower.
They may not carry the mainstream name power of Becky and AJ, The Bellas, Paige, Charlotte, Alexa, or Bayley — but they have incredible momentum. Morgan is on the path to becoming a legend in her own right, having walked a long and hard road from NXT all the way here. Vaquer, on the other hand, is a worldwide indie icon transforming into an ultra, mega star right in front of us — and it's a well-deserved, rapid ascent for La Primera.
What genuinely keeps me most excited about this one is their wrestling. These two have really dynamic styles, developed in completely different environments — and that contrast is going to make for a fascinating, technically rich showdown for anyone who appreciates in-ring craft.
Who do I think will win? Same as before: both deserve it. As a fan, I cheer for the face (Vaquer). As an analyst and wannabe-booker, I wouldn't mind seeing Liv win and watching Judgment Day implode — or watching Raquel Rodriguez or Roxanne Perez cost her the match… or worse, help her win.
So yes, this match is #3 for me — against all logic.
JADE CARGILL (c) VS. RHEA RIPLEY
WWE Women's Championship — Night 2
This match was my #1 before the rumors hit and changed everything. This and Liv vs. Vaquer were my top two — because they're for the main titles and involve fresh, new legends who are the future of WWE. The rest had a bit of a high school reunion vibe, honestly.
But things happened, and now this lands at #2 on my personal anticipation scale.
The booking here is genuinely brilliant. Rhea Ripley is not your regular powerhouse — she can drive Jade to her limits, pull her out of her comfort zone, and force her to dig deeper than anyone else has managed. The Eradicator is dynamic, quick, agile, and powerful. The opposite of Michin or Chelsea Green. Different from Jordynne Grace or Naomi, who really tested Cargill's range. To me, only Bianca Belair challenges the Storm the way Rhea does. And I cannot wait to see who walks out of Las Vegas with that title.
I would love to see Rhea Bloody Ripley with that belt on her shoulder — but maybe Jade needs it more right now. I'm also curious what role Michin and B-Fab will play, if any. Either way? This is going to be a showstopper.
NIA JAX & LASH LEGEND (c) VS. BAYLEY & LYRA VALKYRIA VS. ALEXA BLISS & CHARLOTTE FLAIR VS. THE BELLA TWINS
WWE Women's Tag Team Championship — Fatal 4-Way — Night 1
This match started as my #4 or #3 — and then it grabbed all the attention and every ounce of curiosity in the room.
As you likely know by now, Nikki Bella has been ruled out due to an ankle injury sustained on SmackDown. And her replacement? Paige is back. Paige has reportedly signed a multi-year WWE deal and is set to step in alongside Brie Bella tonight. The moment feels almost poetic — especially with AJ Lee competing in the match right before this one. WrestleMania 31 flashback, anyone?
Will Paige and Brie actually win the titles on the grandest stage?
Will there be a historical, precedent-setting reign under the Freebird Rule with Paige and The Bella Twins at the helm?
Will we see the championship prestige of the Women's Tag titles continue to skyrocket?
All of that slingshot this match from "interesting multi-team bout" to absolute must-see material for Night 1. The Women's Tag Team Championship is hotter and more prestigious than ever — and whatever happens tonight, it can only go higher from here.
I really want to see Brie and Paige winning. I am categorical about that.
In General
We have a historic WrestleMania with four women's championship matches — three on Night 1, one anchoring Night 2. It involves legends of the not-too-distant past like AJ Lee, Paige, and The Bella Twins; three of WWE's NXT/Horsewomen generation (Bayley, Charlotte, and Becky) booked across three of the four matches; and a collection of future Hall of Famers like Vaquer, Morgan, Ripley, and Cargill. The show is absolutely packed, and despite my nuanced levels of excitement, every single one of these matches is worth watching. I will enjoy doing exactly that tonight — and tomorrow night.
And don't forget that anything could happen!

Y sí, mientras escribo esto, el Fatal 4-Way por los títulos femeninos en parejas se perfila como el main event emocional de la Noche 1. Una locura, ¿no? Pero ya llegaremos a eso.

La idea es la siguiente: voy a empezar con el combate que menos hype me genera personalmente y terminar con el/los que no me perdería por nada del mundo.

AJ LEE (c) vs. BECKY LYNCH
Campeonato Intercontinental Femenino de WWE — Noche 1
Este combate está colocado antes del título mundial femenino en la cartelera, lo cual tiene todo el sentido del mundo por el star power que tienen. AJ y Big Time Becks son nombres enormes en WWE y a nivel global, así que su revancha merece una posición sólida — y la tiene.
Pero personalmente… no me genera un nivel altísimo de emoción. Y no tiene absolutamente nada que ver con el talento o la admiración que siento por ambas. Simplemente fue… esperado. En el momento en que AJ hizo rendir a Lynch en Elimination Chamber en Chicago para ganar el título, estaba claro hacia dónde iba la revancha. Fue una historia demasiado limpia.
Dicho esto, creo que será un combate intenso y dramático. Ambas han elevado claramente su nivel desde Wrestlepalooza, y realmente merecen estar en el Show of Shows. ¿Quién gana? No importa. Es un win-win. Lo que más me emociona aquí es su wrestling. Tienen estilos muy dinámicos, desarrollados en entornos completamente distintos — y ese contraste va a crear un combate fascinante y técnicamente riquísimo.
¿Quién gana? Igual que antes: ambas lo merecen. Como fan, voy con la face (Vaquer). Como analista (y wannabe booker), no me molestaría ver a Liv ganar… o incluso ver a Judgment Day implosionar — o que Raquel Rodríguez o Roxanne Pérez intervengan… para hacerla perder… o peor aún, para ayudarla a ganar.

Campeonato Femenino de WWE — Noche 2
Este era mi #1 antes de que los rumores lo cambiaran todo. Este y Liv vs. Vaquer eran mis top 2 — títulos principales, caras nuevas, futuras leyendas. El resto tenía un aire más de reunión del instituto, sinceramente.
Pero las cosas cambiaron, y ahora este está en el #2.
El booking aquí es brillante. Rhea Ripley no es una powerhouse cualquiera — puede llevar a Jade al límite, sacarla de su zona de confort y obligarla a profundizar como nadie más lo ha hecho. The Eradicator es dinámica, rápida, ágil y potente. Muy distinta a Michin o Chelsea Green. Diferente también a Jordynne Grace o Naomi, que ya pusieron a prueba a Cargill. Para mí, solo Bianca Belair desafía a la Storm de forma comparable.
No puedo esperar a ver quién sale de Las Vegas con ese título.
Me encantaría ver a Rhea Bloody Ripley con el campeonato… pero quizá Jade lo necesita más ahora mismo. También tengo curiosidad por el posible papel de Michin y B-Fab. Sea como sea: esto va a ser un showstealer.

Campeonato Femenino en Parejas de WWE — Fatal 4-Way — Noche 1
Este combate empezó como mi #4 o #3… y de repente se llevó toda la atención y curiosidad.
Como probablemente ya sabes, Nikki Bella está fuera por una lesión de tobillo sufrida en SmackDown. ¿Su reemplazo? Paige ha vuelto. Ha firmado un contrato multianual con WWE y competirá junto a Brie Bella esta noche. El momento es casi poético — especialmente con AJ Lee luchando justo antes. ¿Flashback a WrestleMania 31?
¿Ganaràn Paige y Brie los títulos en el escenario más grande?
