Paige Is Back — And WrestleMania 42 Just Got So Much Better

Saraya-Jade Bevis — known to the world as Paige — has re-signed with WWE on a multi-year deal. And it gets even better: she is expected to return tonight, replacing the injured Nikki Bella in the Women's Tag Team Championship Fatal 4-Way. Which is going to cause a massive audience pop — and she's walking into a match already packed with legendary returns like Charlotte Flair and Bayley. They all deserve it, and even a match for the WWE Women's Tag Team belts is more than good enough — it elevates the title like never before.

But back to Paige.

Now, teaming up with Brie Bella is actually quite delicious when you think about their history — because on screen, they were anything but friendly. Paige and Brie spent a significant chunk of 2014 and 2015 as fierce rivals, including Paige and AJ Lee defeating the Bella Twins at WrestleMania 31. And now, eleven years later, Paige stands beside Brie on that same grandest stage. The full circle of that is genuinely poetic — especially on the same night AJ Lee defends the Women's Intercontinental Championship. The whole era is back at once. Outside the ring, though, these women were always warm friends, which makes this alliance feel a little less strange and a lot more interesting.

Setting the history aside, this completely shifts the probabilities and tilts the scales in The Bellas' favor. If Paige replaces Nikki, this could absolutely still result in a title win for her and Brie. And here's a thought: maybe they can even invoke the Freebird Rule — the provision where any member of a stable of three or more can defend a tag team championship. Paige and the Bella Twins could become the first women's trio to reign and defend under this rule, following in the footsteps of men's stables like The New Day and The Bloodline. Why not?
