Fatal 4-Way at WrestleMania? Great. But Did It Have to Feel Like an Afterthought?

As much as I find Bayley and Lyra Valkyria's alliance amusing, to me, they function less like a real tag team than Charlotte and Alexa Bliss do. Somehow, Flair and Bliss were written with genuine cohesion. At the same time, the Role Model and Lyra have had a really bumpy ride together — the psychotic Bayley episodes, Lyra's constant wariness, the tension that never quite resolved. And lately, all of that was just quietly written off the script. Gone. Moving on.
I respect their work in the ring. I respect their individual struggles to build their characters. But their addition this Monday to the WrestleMania 42 WWE Women's Tag Team Championship match — now a Fatal 4-Way — felt forced and out of nowhere.
Seriously, it looked like some creative executive woke up on Monday and decided: "Hey, let's send Bayley and that other girl she drags around everywhere — Lyra — to WrestleMania! That'll feel spontaneous! ...And we did screw Bay last year, so... take it as compensation for not knowing what to do with them!"
The "funny" part is that it probably wasn't entirely spontaneous. Maybe they'd been planning it for two weeks, after noticing Bayley building a little momentum — her match against AJ Lee for the IC title, her debut against Lady Flammer in AAA for the Reina de Reinas belt. So someone in creative said "she's hot right now, let's use it." Fine. But the execution?
Meanwhile, nobody seems to know what to do with Lyra Valkyria — so they keep booking her below her actual level. She is absolutely amazing in the ring, but her character work remains a struggle, and many fans don't find her compelling enough outside of a physical match. So the solution is: keep her stitched to Bayley and build these awkward, meandering angles around her. That's not a creative strategy. That's a holding pattern.
For three weeks, we watched The Bella Twins, Charlotte Flair & Alexa Bliss, and the champions Nia Jax and Lash Legend building a genuine, layered rivalry. Bayley and Lyra were nowhere in that picture — until last week's Raw, where they won a strangely sudden number one contenders match against The Kabuki Warriors and immediately challenged for the title. It all looked awkward, transparently stitched together with one clear goal: get Bayley to WrestleMania.
And here's where I need to be clear — I love seeing Bayley and Lyra at the Grandest Stage of Them All. They deserve it. Genuinely. Bayley especially, after being written out of her own WrestleMania moment last year in the most unceremonious way. She deserves that night. But why does the build have to look this sloppy? Why wait until the last week before WrestleMania to slot them in? They could have woven Bayley and Lyra into this storyline weeks ago — a subtle background presence, a confrontation, anything — instead of treating their addition like a footnote.
I am criticizing the build. Not the participants. Because in this case, the problem is not who is in the match — all of them deserve to be there. The problem is the last-minute, out-of-nowhere booking that makes a potentially great story feel like a rushed checkbox.
At this point the Fatal 4-Way felt concretely solid as a Triple Threat. Stacked, well-built, full. But no — we get a "surprise" that isn't really a surprise, just poorly timed. WWE really could have done better here. And they know it.
Let me end on something positive though — because I genuinely cannot wait to watch this match. I admire and respect every single woman involved, and they are all more than capable of delivering something special on the biggest stage. Next week, I'll be breaking down the possibilities — who has the best chance, who has the most to gain, who walks out with the gold. That analysis is going to be really hard and really fun at the same time.
The lame last-minute build-up is not their fault. And they'll prove it at WrestleMania.

¿Fatal 4-Way en WrestleMania? Genial.
A otra cosa.
