It Smells Like a Triple Threat Setup — And WrestleMania Is the Perfect Stage

 

It was inevitable.

After The Bella Twins clearly stated their intentions — to become WWE Women's Tag Team Champions — it all built to this title shot last night on SmackDown. Especially after their ringside interference the week before. And knowing they signed a two-year deal, which is genuinely great news. As I've said before, they are a textbook example of how a tag team should function as a unit. I think they deserve a reign with those belts. Surprise? Naaah!

What makes it even more remarkable is that — as Nikki Bella revealed herself — WWE only told them about this title opportunity the same day they showed up for SmackDown. Hours before it happened. And they delivered. That says everything about who the Bellas are as performers.

Logically, Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss took seats at ringside mid-match — returning the twins' "favor" from the week before. The moment they appeared, it was crystal clear what was coming. History would repeat itself. Especially after Nia sent Nikki flying right into The Queen's lap — that was the spark.

The match itself was at a solid level. Really good tag-team dynamic, nothing too extreme, a decent amount of drama. It was genuinely great to see Brie Bella back and rolling. As a graphic before the bout reminded us, the Bella Twins hadn't competed together since 2018 — and this was their first-ever shot at the WWE Women's Tag Team Championship, a title that didn't even exist during their first full-time run.

Then the chaos erupted. The match ended via DQ as Charlotte tried to prevent Jax from using the title belt on Brie at ringside — and went too far by hitting Nia herself. The brawl that followed was very much a mirror of the week before. And the champions stood tall again. Just like last week.

So next week we get The Bella Twins vs. Alexa Bliss and Charlotte Flair. And you can be absolutely sure that something will happen — another brawl, another layer added — and the WrestleMania 42 stage will be fully set. This storyline is going in one direction: a Triple Threat match for the Women's Tag Team Championship at The Grandest Stage of Them All. It's written all over it.

Some might say the Bellas' inclusion in this rivalry felt a little rushed. But sometimes a quickly developing storyline is better than a slow burn, and this one has been three weeks in the making now — with only a couple of weeks of April left before WrestleMania weekend. The timing actually works. With their new contracts signed, The Bellas were clearly granted a match on the show. And Charlotte Flair will make her near-annual appearance — she has attended every WrestleMania since her debut at 32, with only two exceptions: WM37, when COVID forced her out, and WM40, when a serious knee injury kept her on the sidelines. The Queen is practically a WrestleMania subscription at this point.

And then there's the Women's Intercontinental Championship picture, which is heating up fast. AJ Lee won the title from Becky Lynch at Elimination Chamber — and Lynch has already come back swinging, attacking Lee after her Raw title defense against Bayley just this past Monday. That rivalry is far from over, and WrestleMania feels like the inevitable destination.

So by my count, we are looking at potentially four women's matches taking shape for WrestleMania 42 — two already confirmed, two in the final phase of buildup. The question now is: will WWE add even more to the card, or is four the right number? Women's wrestling at WrestleMania has never had more momentum. And it shows.
