Survive, Advance, Dominate: Thoughts on Raw's Women's Gauntlet
While WWE has been reducing the number of Battle Royals — which I personally enjoy a lot and find genuinely fun — the situation with Gauntlet matches is all about the time and energy they demand. You're essentially watching five matches in one time slot, all counted as one. But when the stakes are this big — the #1 Contendership for AJ Lee's Women's Intercontinental Championship — the format was absolutely worth it. That match was brilliantly booked.
It's physical, exhausting, and can be damaging in very real ways.
A lot of people are flagging Ivy Nile eliminating IYO SKY as the big twist — but that elimination was a pure opportunity grab after Raquel Rodriguez had already beaten SKY down following her own elimination. It wasn't clean, but it counts, and it's still a smart move from Ivy. It's a nice little push for a performer who is far too often neglected or used to elevate others.
IYO SKY eliminating Lyra Valkyria first, and then Raquel Rodriguez second (after some ringside chaos sparked by Liv Morgan and Stephanie Vaquer), was a genuine treat for her fans. Her being 3rd eliminated, and that quiet, sharp moment of apparent compassion from Bayley that Nile then turned against her — those were exactly the kinds of storytelling touches that make a Gauntlet match special.
Ivy giving The Role Model a real fight was nothing less than expected, even if she had to go as the 4th eliminated.
And then it came down to an old rivalry — Asuka vs. Bayley — picked right back up where their NXT history left them. Bayley opened it with a beautiful suicide dive onto the entering Empress, which was a great little echo of the strategy we've been seeing lately: get to Asuka before she gets to you, cut her momentum before the bell, exactly as happened at Elimination Chamber. The Role Model followed that playbook to a T, and it's a brilliantly logical strategy.
After the kind of all-in, blood-sweat-and-tears match that Asuka always delivers — full of her signature technical precision and those classic submission holds — Bayley was put over, and she absolutely deserved it. And now we're on our way to watching a piece of history repeat itself.
Over a decade ago, a young Bayley — the bubbly Hugger with the signature ponytail, still finding herself in NXT — challenged AJ Lee for her WWE Divas Championship, and came up short. Now she's The Role Model: seasoned, battle-hardened, and coming off a grueling Gauntlet win. AJ Lee, meanwhile, has returned after more than a decade away from the business, freshly crowned Women's IC Champion after beating Becky Lynch at Elimination Chamber. The playing field has shifted completely — and that's exactly what makes next Monday's title match feel so electric. Add Lyra Valkyria evening the odds by stopping Kairi Sane from getting involved, and the pieces could not be set up better.
