Naaah, Mercedes Moné Is Not Losing — She's Investing

 

Talking about rising talents can't really be separated from the "fall" of established ones. Or, to put it another way: we can't celebrate the stunning new names entering the women's wrestling scene without thanking the established talents who help elevate them by "dropping" the belt.

I didn't follow Mercedes Moné's title-chasing crusade across the USA, UK, Japan, and Mexico as a critic. I was sitting back and taking notes — acknowledging that she is one of the hardest-working and most talented wrestlers out there, and that she deserved every one of those opportunities. But I also enjoyed watching the consequences unfold. Because "feeding" someone title after title — over 13 international championships at her peak — eventually turns the narrative against them. Fans start getting restless. They start waiting for the karma to come around.

Everyone knows that collecting a bunch of belts leads, sooner or later, to losing them.

So, after dropping the CMLL Women's World title to Persephone on March 6th, and the BestYa Wrestling Women's title to Swan on March 8th, Mercedes has now lost all of her major titles — CMLL, NJPW STRONG, AEW TBS, ROH. What remains in her collection are:

• DW Women's Championship (Discovery Wrestling, Scotland)
• BODYSLAM! Women's Championship (Denmark)
• WPW Women's Championship (Winnipeg Pro Wrestling, Canada)
• EWA Women's Championship (European Wrestling Association, Austria)
• PTW Women's Championship (Prime Time Wrestling, Poland)
• APAC Women's Championship (Malaysia/Asia-Pacific)
• Owen Hart Cup Championship (AEW Tournament Belt — not a regularly defended title)

The rumors say she will be put into the AEW Women's World title picture soon. A title she has never won — despite trying twice, against both Toni Storm and Kris Statlander. And honestly? That is actually really exciting and dramatic storytelling.

I fully support the creative idea of having her shed her major titles — and why not the secondary ones too — so she can finally go after the one belt that has always eluded her. The one that both Toni Storm and Kris Statlander denied her. So no, I don't feel sorry for Mercedes Moné. And we should all be grateful for her willingness to be there, to do the work, and to elevate talented women like Persephone, Red Velvet, and others on their way up.

If that isn't a true display of love for women's wrestling, I honestly don't know what is. 😉

Hablar de los talentos emergentes no puede separarse de la "caída" de los ya establecidos. O, dicho de otra manera: no podemos celebrar los nuevos nombres impresionantes que entran en la escena de la lucha libre femenina sin agradecer a los talentos consolidados que las elevan al "soltar" el título.

No seguí la cruzada de Mercedes Moné por títulos a lo largo de Estados Unidos, Reino Unido, Japón y México como una crítica. Estaba ahí, tomando nota — reconociendo que es una de las luchadoras más trabajadoras y talentosas que existen, y que se mereció cada una de esas oportunidades. Pero también disfruté viendo cómo se desarrollaban las consecuencias. Porque "alimentar" a alguien con título tras título — más de 13 campeonatos internacionales en su mejor momento — eventualmente vuelve la narrativa en su contra. Las fans empiezan a impacientarse. Empiezan a esperar que llegue el karma.

Todo el mundo sabe que acumular un montón de títulos lleva, tarde o temprano, a perderlos.

Así que, tras ceder el Campeonato Mundial Femenino del CMLL a Persephone el 6 de marzo, y el Campeonato Femenino de BestYa Wrestling a Swan el 8 de marzo, Mercedes ha perdido ya todos sus títulos importantes — CMLL, NJPW STRONG, AEW TBS, ROH. Lo que queda en su colección son:

• Campeonato Femenino BODYSLAM! (Dinamarca)

Los rumores dicen que pronto la meterán en la lucha por el Campeonato Mundial Femenino de AEW. Un título que nunca ha ganado — a pesar de haberlo intentado dos veces, ante Toni Storm y Kris Statlander. ¿Y sabes qué? Eso es, en realidad, una narrativa emocionante y dramática.

Apoyo totalmente la idea creativa de hacerla perder sus títulos principales — y ¿por qué no también los secundarios? — para que pueda ir finalmente a por el único cinturón que siempre se le ha escapado. El que tanto Toni Storm como Kris Statlander le negaron. Así que no, no siento lástima por Mercedes Moné. Y todas deberíamos estar agradecidas por su disposición a estar ahí, a hacer el trabajo, y a elevar a talentos como Persephone, Red Velvet y otras en su camino hacia arriba.

Si eso no es una verdadera demostración de amor por la lucha libre femenina, sinceramente no sé qué lo es. 😉
