Once Upon a time there was a match at WWE Night of Champions 2010. Then WWE Divas Champion Melina faced then WWE Women's Champion Michelle McCool.. khm... WWE Women's (self-declared) Co-Champion Michelle McCool in a Lumberjills Match! Her partner (and actual title holder) - Layla, sat there totally unhappy with crossed in front arms. The match was epic, the end was tragic! Not only that Layla overcome her frustration with Michelle taking her place and attacking Melina, to secure McCool victory! It was an TITLES UNIFICATION MATCH!
Two similar titles, with similar meaning, were unified!
What's the problem?
I grew up watching this belt being retained by the likes of Trish, Victoria, Jazz, Lita, Mickie etc. |
The problem was that the WWE Women's Championship had legacy. It still have legacy. The Divas Championship was just suitable, because it was named after then trademark label of WWE Women's division. At the time the female talents in WWE were not 'women', they were 'Divas', so they needed a more 'personally-suitable titled title' that reflected the label! Some will said that they tried to erase the Women's Title legacy and history, but... Come on guys you can't erase Trish Stratus, Lita, Molly Holly, Gail Kim, Ivory, Jazz, Victoria and many more related to that belt. You can't erase their accomplishments and contribution in the evolution of the women's wrestling not only in WWE.
At the end we had WWE Divas Championship who were won by several former Women's title holders like Melina, Mickie James, Beth Phoenix, Michelle McCool and the last Women's Championship holder Layla. They add some validation to the belt. Great athletic women like Natalya, Paige, Eve Torres, AJ Lee and Brie Bella validate it with their intensive reigns and strong wrestling abilities.
Then the fans decided, that they had enough sex/gender segregation! They wanted more high quality women's wrestling, with more opportunities, more diversity, more challenging wome's wrestling. It started with #GiveDivasAChance and ended with the re-intorduced WWE Women's Title, presented by one of the WWE women's revolutionary wrestlers - the Hall of Famer, LITA!
Then we had a DRAFT! The post-draft reality ended with two women's divisions, with two belts, with no history... The history started to be written, really quickly. Charlotte-Sasha-Charlotte-Sasha, Becky-Alexa-Naomi-Natalya-Alexa... almost in that order ๐.
And now both belts are on the line in 'Winners Takes All' Match. And that is bringing some questions to mind: Is this unification? Could they have a champion who will defend her title on Monday and Tuesday? What's the idea?
If this is s unification we have two sides of the topic:
SIDE-ONE: ANTI-UNIFCATION
The Angel in Me Calling On The Topic
We hope that this will not be a unification. That will mean that the two brands will have to fight for one title, which adds more competition. But at this point we just got used to SmackDown Women's division having their (kind of underrated) title! It was won by great names, who weren't that great at the time they won it like Alexa Bliss, Becky Lynch, Naomi, and Natalya... Charlotte Flair and Asuka, were the two highly legitimate title holders and Becky Lynch added more prestige when she was recreated into the Man! But it's their own title! They need it!
One title means that many talented women might be skipped over and robbed of opportunity! The belts history related to classic and inaugural matches, will be somehow rebooted!
Both brands deserves their belts, and we are not sure that our hearts will take the emotional toll of another Draft that soon!
๐Kidding!๐
SIDE TWO: PRO-UNIFICATION
The Devil in Me Takes on the Topic
I want it!
I want drama! I want competition! And more drama!
One Belt means more inner and inter-brand rivalries! There will be a cruel fight for topping the #1 Contenders List! Battle of gimmicks, moves, every single woman in that locker room should rebuild and re-establish herself in order to win the coveted belt!
The women's wrestling reality in WWE after a Title Unification will be cruel, highly competitive, merciful and harsh!
About the history? That belts have some history, but history might be rebooted and re-written in a even better manner. So unify them!
